PLAN

The Plan phase is critical for any project; whether you are building a course or a house, spending time up front to align on budget, timeline, scope and quality expectations are critical for success.

ANALYZE

Before jumping in a creating or even designing a solution, it is important to have a full understanding of the situation. We call this a Learning Needs Analysis. Who is impacted? What is the environment? What has been tried before? What worked? What didn't?

DESIGN

Once we have good understanding of the project goals, understand the learning needs, we can document our ideas for the training in the form of a course outline. This is the blueprint for the learning intervention. If there are multiple courses, and users have different learning plans, then a full curriculum map or learning map may be needed to show how the pieces work together.

DEVELOP

Only after the learning design has been approved by subject matter experts who understand the current and future state, do we start developing the learning resources.

IMPLEMENT

Implement, also called Delivery, is when the program is launched virtually, in person or via an LMS or Learning Experience Platform. Depending on how many users, the variation in their roles and training plans, the # of sites, etc. The complexity of the Implement phase can vary greatly.

EVALUATE

The most often skipped phase is Evaluate. Effective evaluation should begin in the PLAN and ANALYZE phases. We need to define what "good looks like" early and have plans to gather data and incorporate evaluation throughout the project.
